Our Mission

To conduct research activities aimed at building a globally competitive Mongolia, adhering strictly to international methodologies.

The Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center is an independent, non-profit research organization free from political influence.

2010

The “Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center” (EPCRC) was established in 2010 at the initiative of leading private sector organizations.
At the invitation of the EPCRC, representatives from the World Competitiveness Center under the Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD) organized a discussion on “Competitiveness” at the Government House.
During the discussion, the EPCRC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Competitiveness Center.
Commenced the specialized competitiveness research work of Mongolia.

2011

Released the first-ever Mongolia Competitiveness Report.
Began publishing quarterly banking competition reviews and monthly macroeconomic updates.
Conducted a study on “Mongolia: The Impact of Air Transport Liberalization”.
Conducted developmental policy research commissioned by the World Bank.
Conducted “A Study on the Status of Chinese and Russian Mining Companies Operating in Mongolia” under a project supported by The Asia Foundation.
Awarded “Best Research Institution of the Year” by the Business Council of Mongolia.
Named the “Best Practitioner of Good Governance” at the “Entrepreneur-2011” awards by the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI).

2012

Presented the “Mongolia Competitiveness Report 2011” during the Mongolia Economic Forum.
Organized public discussions and the “Partnership for Reform” forum within the framework of the Competitiveness and Business Environment Improvement Roadmap project.
Conducted a baseline study under the project “Attracting Foreign Investment in Low-Carbon Electricity Generation” commissioned by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Implemented the “Policy Research Methodology: A New Culture in Mongolia” project.
Joined the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils (GFCC).
Hosted a discussion themed “Competitiveness of Mongolia: Where are we headed?” and published the conference proceedings in both Mongolian and English.

2013

Released the “Mongolia Competitiveness Report 2012” to the public.
Published the first-ever “Provincial Competitiveness Report” (ranking all 21 provinces of Mongolia).
Organized a series of panel discussions under the theme “Mongolian Development Roadmap: Building an Optimistic Future” and published a booklet.
Initiated monthly networking meetings for local researchers and scholars.

2014

Completed the “Competitiveness Report of Soums in Umnugovi Province 2013” research.
Conducted the study “Green Economy Status in Mongolia”.
Published the research report “Green Jobs Mapping in Mongolia”.
Organized the first-ever Provincial Competitiveness Forum.
Published the Mongolia Competitiveness Report 2013.

2015

Organized the “Competitiveness and Local Development” breakout session during the Mongolia Economic Forum.
Launched the new website www.aimagindex.mn for the “Provincial Competitiveness Research” project, co-implemented with the support of The Asia Foundation.
Organized the Eastern Region (Sukhbaatar, Dornod, Khentii) Competitiveness Forum on October 7, 2015, in Baruun-Urt city, Sukhbaatar province.
Published the Mongolia Competitiveness Report 2014.
Published the Provincial Competitiveness Report 2014.

2016

Representatives from the EPCRC participated in the Asia Think Tank Summit held in Seoul, South Korea, on June 8-11, 2016.
Representatives from the EPCRC attended the first-ever “Central Asia Think Tank Development Forum” initiated by the Asian Development Bank in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Participated in the “Mongolia Economic Forum 2016”.
The EPCRC joined the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) as a member and became its official partner organization in Mongolia.
Organized the “Gobi Region Competitiveness Forum” on November 3-4 in Mandalgobi city, Dundgovi province.
Hosted a discussion to present the preliminary findings of the study “Belt and Road Initiative and Economic Diversification of Developing Landlocked Countries: Risks and Opportunities for Mongolia”.
Published the Provincial Competitiveness Report 2015.

2017

Following the release of the annual World Competitiveness Yearbook, Mongolia ranked 62nd out of 63 economies.
Attended the official opening ceremony of the CAREC Institute and the Second CAREC Think Tank Development Forum in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China.
Organized the “Khangai Region Competitiveness Forum 2017” on October 12-13 in Murun city, Khuvsgul province.
The annual global meeting of the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) was held in Trinidad and Tobago, with the EPCRC representing Mongolia.
The Asia Think Tank Summit 2017 was held in Singapore under the theme “Think Tanks, Public Policy, and Governance”.
Attended the regular meeting of the Green Jobs Assessment Institutions Network (GAIN) under the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

2018

Published the Provincial Competitiveness Report 2017.
Launched the nogoonhutuch.mn website to disseminate news, resources, and information regarding green economy concepts.
Published the “Green Economy Barometer 2018” report in collaboration with the Green Economy Coalition, supported by the European Union.
Organized a debate and panel discussion themed “Green Economy or Greenwashed Economy?”.
Organized the “Central Region Competitiveness Forum 2018” on October 26, 2018, in Darkhan city, Darkhan-Uul province.

2019

Published the Provincial Competitiveness Report 2018.
Conducted a study on the “Status of Platform Economy in Mongolia” commissioned by the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO).
Organized a local forum on “Why Facts and Think Tanks Matter”, hosted annually by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
The EPCRC, in partnership with the GEC, launched the “Participatory Solutions Campaign”. Within the campaign, they organized “Neighbours’ Gathering” informal town hall meetings among citizens.
Published the Ulaanbaatar District Competitiveness Report 2019.
