Helping businesses recycle building waste
An innovative new green project that will recycle Mongolian building and construction waste, much of which is currently dumped or processed inefficiently, has gained the support of the European Commission, SWITCH-Asia, and the Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center (EPCRC), over the next four years.
Construction waste, including bricks and cement, accounts for up to 40 per cent of all solid waste produced in Mongolia every year. The European Union-funded Improving resource efficiency and cleaner production in the Mongolian construction sector project, aims to significantly reduce that amount through increased recycling.
The project is a partnership between Caritas Czech Republic, Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Mongolian University of Science and Technology, the Mongolian National Recycling Association, and the EPCRC.
With green financing a rapidly growing space, in Mongolia and internationally, the EPCRC will work to better link the green financing industry with small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the recycling space. SMEs in the sector can face barriers to funding, and the project is hoped to make financial support more readily available to businesses making products from construction waste.
The Improving resource efficiency and cleaner production in the Mongolian construction sector project is part of the SWITCH-Asia program, which is funded by the European Union. The four-year project, which is due for completion in 2020, aims to green the waste supply chain from design through to demolition.

Partners from the Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center, Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Mongolia University of Science and Technology and the Mongolian National Recycling Association celebrate the launch of the Improving resource efficiency and cleaner production in the Mongolian construction sector project on 12 May 2016.
