How simple reforms improve business environment?

In light of the recent election and the
creation of the self-titled New Government for Changes, the Economic
Policy and Competitiveness Research Center (EPCRC) is joining with the
Office of the President, the Business Plus Initiative (BPI) project of
USAID to develop Mongolia`s Competitiveness and Business Enabling Road
Map. This initiative seeks to unite the private sector under a common
banner of shared goals for recreating the current business environment
and addressing deficits in Mongolia’s competitiveness.

In order to improve business
environment through reforms it is also important to examine the lessons
learned from top reformer countries such as Georgia. Thus, Mr. Aleksi
Aleksishvili visited Mongolia and shared his experiences with Georgia’s
economic growth through business reforms in the last decade. Mr.
Aleksishvili has served in several important government positions
including Minister of Economic Development and Minister of Finance,
which gave him an important perspective on how Georgia was able to rise
from 132nd place in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business survey to
11th place in only five years. Before the reforms to their business
environment, Georgia’s economic and political situation was very similar
to Mongolia’s, if not worse. The collapse of the USSR had created a
vacuum and amidst that turmoil, communism was replaced with the
beginnings of a free market. In 7th of September 2012, the EPCRC in
conjunction with the Press Institute and the BPI project, organized a
roundtable discussion entitled “How Simple Reforms Improve Business
Environment?” between lawyers and Mr. Aleksi Aleksishvili in front of an
audience of economic journalists. “Thanks to the privatization Georgia
earned as much money as Mongolia has been making from mineral exports
today” pointed Mr. Aleksi Aleksishvili, “All countries, no matter with
or without mineral resources, certainly must have a good governance and a
favorable business environment”.
